Memorial Day weekend may still be a couple weeks away, but somehow it always arrives faster than expected.

One minute it feels like spring just started… and the next thing you know, everyone’s trying to figure out last-minute plans, book patio reservations, or decide whether staying home actually sounds better than fighting cabin traffic.

The good news? You don’t have to leave town to have a great Memorial Day weekend.

One of the best parts of living in the Twin Cities is how quickly the entire metro comes alive once summer unofficially begins. Outdoor events return. Patios fill up. Lakes become the center of everything. Neighborhood festivals pop up everywhere. And after a long Minnesota winter, people are finally ready to get outside again.

If you’re looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend (May 23–25), here are a few events and local spots worth planning for now:

Events Worth Planning For

Kickoff to Summer at the Fair
The Minnesota State Fairgrounds officially kick off summer with fair food, the giant slide, live entertainment, shopping vendors, and family activities throughout Memorial Day weekend. It’s basically a mini State Fair—and one of the biggest local events already drawing attention for the holiday weekend.

The Great Big Jamboree
Hosted at Hyland Hills in Bloomington, this family-friendly festival features live music, art activities, and a fun kickoff to summer atmosphere.

Memorial Day at Lakewood Cemetery
Lakewood Cemetery hosts one of the Twin Cities’ most meaningful Memorial Day traditions with remembrance ceremonies, live music, memorial tributes, and beautiful grounds to explore.

Patios & Summer Hot Spots

Memorial Day weekend is unofficially the beginning of Minnesota patio season—and honestly, that’s reason enough to celebrate.

A few of our local favorites worth visiting:

  • City House
Perched in St. Paul overlooking the Mississippi River and Harriet Island, this spot is all about the view and the vibe. It has that rare combination of being in the city while still feeling open, scenic, and relaxed—especially when the weather finally turns. It’s the kind of place where you go for dinner and end up staying for sunset.
  • W.A. Frost
Classic St. Paul charm at its best. Set in a historic Victorian home, the garden patio feels tucked away and unexpectedly peaceful for being right on Cathedral Hill. It’s one of those spots that instantly slows the pace of your evening in the best way.
  • Saint Paul Brewing
One of the most unique brewery settings in the metro—set inside a historic building with massive outdoor space, fire pits, murals, and a laid-back, creative energy. It’s equal parts hangout spot and experience, especially when live music or a food truck is on site.

Whether it’s brunch with friends, burgers on a sunny patio, or a relaxed evening out after a long winter, this is the weekend people wait for all year.

Easy Twin Cities Day Trips

Not every great Memorial Day weekend requires a hotel reservation.

A few easy local day-trip ideas:

  • Walk around Lake Harriet
  • Visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
  • Spend the afternoon in downtown Stillwater
  • Explore shops and lake views in Excelsior
  • Visit local farmers markets and garden centers
  • Rent paddleboards or kayaks for the afternoon
  • Pack a picnic and spend the day outdoors

Sometimes the best Minnesota weekends are the simplest ones.

At-Home Memorial Day Ideas

Of course, staying home can be pretty great too.

Open the windows. Pull out the patio furniture. Invite friends over. Fire up the grill. Spend an evening outside instead of rushing from place to place.

That first truly relaxed weekend at home after winter always feels different.

And honestly, that feeling is one of the reasons people fall in love with where they live in the first place.

The lifestyle surrounding a home matters just as much as the home itself—especially during weekends like Memorial Day. Parks, trails, patios, lakes, local events, and gathering spaces all shape how a community feels day-to-day.

That’s a huge part of what makes the Twin Cities such a great place to call home.
