Not Headed Out Of Town This Labor Day? Start Planning Now

Labor Day weekend (September 5–7) is still two weeks out, but if you're not headed out of town, now's the time to start planning. The Twin Cities has more going on this stretch than almost any other time of year, and a little advance planning means you actually get tickets, reservations, or just a little peace of mind instead of scrambling last-minute.

Pencil These In Now:

• Minnesota Renaissance Festival – Open weekends through October 4th in Shakopee. Knights, turkey legs, and jousting—grab tickets online ahead of time to skip the box office line.
• Minnesota State Fair – Runs through Labor Day itself (Sept. 7th). If you want the "unique" version, plan for a weekday or first-thing-Saturday visit before the holiday crowds hit—smaller lines, all the food on a stick.
• Como Park Zoo & Conservatory – Free admission (donations appreciated), and an easy one to build a whole afternoon around.
• Union Depot & the Twin Cities Model Railroad Museum – A Lowertown favorite for train-obsessed kids; worth checking hours ahead since some exhibits are weekend-only.
• Neighborhood farmers markets – Labor Day weekend markets tend to be the last big harvest push of the season.
• A walk across the Stone Arch Bridge at golden hour – Free, no reservations needed, and one of the best skyline views in the state whenever you make it out.
• A backyard end-of-summer gathering – Sometimes the best Labor Day plan is just staying home. If that's the move, this is your two-week notice to actually plan it instead of throwing it together the morning of.

If "staying home for Labor Day" means you're eyeing the weekend as a chance to knock out a project instead of relaxing, we see you too. A few manageable ones that fit in a long weekend without turning into a full renovation:

• Pressure-wash the deck, patio, or driveway before fall leaves make it pointless
• Touch up exterior trim paint while the weather still cooperates
• Clean out the garage before winter gear needs the space back
• Swap out worn caulk around tubs and sinks
• Do a quick gutter check before fall cleanup season hits
