Summer is almost here, and with it comes the best part of home ownership: actually using your home’s outdoor spaces. Pool days, backyard dinners, fire pit evenings with friends, kids playing on the deck—this is what you've been waiting for since "Fool's Spring” in March.

Before everyone arrives, it's worth spending a couple of hours making sure everything is in good working order. Not because something is definitely wrong—just because it's been months since you've really used your outdoor spaces, and a quick checkup now beats an awkward moment (or worse, an injury) later.

Your Backyard Checklist

The Deck or Patio: Walk it like you're a guest seeing it for the first time. Lean on the railings—do they feel solid? Check for loose boards, rough spots, or anything that's clearly been sitting through winter. If you have steps, make sure they're even and sturdy. A wobbly railing or a soft board is easy to fix now, awkward to discover when your deck is full of people.

The Pool or Spa: If it's been closed for winter, now's the time to open it properly. Check that the pump, filter, and circulation system are working. Test the water—it should be clean and balanced before anyone gets in. Make sure gates are closing properly if you have them. If you have a hot tub, set the temperature and test the cover. Nothing fancy—just make sure everything functions the way it should.

The Grill: If you use propane, check the connection and hose for any signs of damage. Test the burners to make sure they light evenly. For charcoal grills, make sure the grates are clean and there's no excessive buildup inside. A quick cleaning now means better cooking all summer.

The Fire Pit: If you have one, clear the area around it of leaves, branches, or anything that's accumulated. Make sure your seating is a comfortable distance away. Keep a hose or fire extinguisher nearby just in case. It's not complicated—just practical.

Outdoor Furniture and Equipment: Dust off chairs and tables. Check for rust or damage. If you have a trampoline or swing set, inspect it for wear. Tighten loose bolts. Make sure everything feels stable and safe to use.

Lighting: Test outdoor lights and replace any burnt-out bulbs. Good lighting makes your backyard safer and more enjoyable as the days get longer and evenings arrive.

Why Do This Now?

Because over the next few months, your backyard may be full of guests and you won't have time to think about repairs. Because fixing a wobbly railing now takes two hours instead of becoming an emergency on the day of your party. Because you get to actually enjoy summer instead of worrying about whether you remembered to check that one thing. Spend an afternoon this weekend walking your property, making notes, and fixing what you can. It's time well spent.
