Why We Celebrate Fair Housing Month Each April
Every April, we proudly celebrate Fair Housing Month—a time to reflect on the importance of equal access to housing and to renew our commitment to upholding fair housing principles in every transaction we handle. As a real estate team serving communities across the Twin Cities metro area, this month holds special significance for us, not just as professionals but as neighbors, advocates, and community builders.
What Is Fair Housing Month?
Fair Housing Month commemorates the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The Act prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and familial status. In Minnesota, we go even further—our state law also prohibits discrimination based on creed, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, and public assistance status.
Fair Housing Month is more than a history lesson—it's a call to action. It's about acknowledging past injustices, addressing present-day challenges, and building a future where everyone has the right to choose where they live without facing discrimination or bias.
Why It Matters to Us as a Real Estate Team
As professionals who guide people through one of the biggest decisions of their lives—buying or selling a home—we recognize the deep responsibility we carry. Housing is not just about property lines and purchase prices; it's about opportunity, dignity, and belonging.
Here’s why we celebrate Fair Housing Month and how it shapes our work every day:
1. We Believe in Equal Access for All
Everyone deserves the right to live where they choose, regardless of background, income, or identity. We’re committed to making that a reality by actively learning, training, and implementing inclusive practices.
2. We Advocate for Inclusive Communities
Fair housing is about more than individual rights—it’s about building vibrant, diverse, and inclusive neighborhoods. We want every community we serve in Minnesota to feel like home for all who live there.
3. We Hold Ourselves to a Higher Standard
We go beyond legal requirements. From how we market listings to how we communicate with clients and colleagues, we strive to foster an environment that’s welcoming, respectful, and just.
4. We Educate and Empower
Fair Housing Month gives us a chance to educate our clients about their rights and to ensure they know how to speak up if something doesn’t feel right. Knowledge is power—and when buyers and sellers are informed, the whole market becomes stronger and more equitable.
Our Promise
Fair Housing Month reminds us why we do what we do—and why it matters. As a real estate team, we promise to keep advocating, keep learning, and keep showing up for our clients and communities with integrity and heart.
Together, we can create a Minnesota where fair housing isn’t just an idea—it’s a lived reality for all.
