Why Your Local Coffee Shop Matters (and 5 Favorites Worth the Drive)

Every community has a few places that make it feel like home. Often, one of them is a coffee shop: the spot where the barista knows your order, a friend is always "just grabbing a latte," and a Tuesday morning feels a little better than it should.

Here's why those places are worth protecting, and a few of our favorites across the metro.

Why local coffee shops matter

  • They keep money close to home. Independent owners buy from local bakers and roasters, hire neighbors, and spend in the community, so your $6 latte does more good than you'd expect.
  • They're our "third place." Not home, not work, just somewhere to be. For people who work from home, live alone, or have more free time than they used to, that matters more than ever.
  • Some are roasters themselves. Three of the five shops below (Tapestry, Dogwood, and Northern Coffeeworks) roast their own coffee, so the beans in your cup were likely roasted close by, not shipped in from a national brand. Others partner with small roasters or local bakers, so one stop supports several local businesses at once.
  • They make a place feel like a place. A great coffee shop is one of the first things people mention when they talk about what they love about where they live.

Plan your coffee run for whoever's coming

  • Going solo: A café is one of the easiest places to enjoy your own company. Bring a book or a notebook, grab a seat at the counter, and chat with the barista. Mid-morning on a weekday is usually the calmest time.
  • Couples and friends: Make it a mini coffee crawl. Pick two spots you haven't tried, split a pastry at each, and compare notes.
  • Families with kids: Go early, before the weekend rush, and look for shops with food kids will actually eat, like crepes or smoothie bowls. Hot chocolate with extra whipped cream works wonders.
  • Retirees and anyone who prefers a slower pace: Weekday mornings mean smaller crowds and easier parking.

Five community favorites

1. Tapestry Coffee | Lakeville (south metro) A Lakeville favorite with two café locations, open 7 am to 3 pm daily. They roast their own coffee and source it with farmers in mind, and locally baked scones and muffins and made-in-house breakfast toasts make it an easy morning stop. Good for: solo mornings, a catch-up with a friend.

2. Dogwood Coffee | Minneapolis (Tyler St) The Tyler Street location at 1209 Tyler St NE is Dogwood's roasting headquarters and café, just across the river from downtown, so your coffee is roasted right there. Known for carefully brewed single-origin coffee and a craft-first approach. Good for: coffee lovers, solo laptop sessions, first dates.

3. Café Astoria | Saint Paul (West 7th) An independent café and creperie in the historic Paulina building at 180 Grand Ave, famous for creative latte art. The menu goes well beyond coffee, with sweet and savory crepes and smoothie bowls. Parking can be tight at peak times, so go early or on a weekday. Good for: families, brunch with friends, out-of-town guests.

4. Northern Coffeeworks | South Minneapolis A cozy, cabin-style café with house-roasted coffee, a seasonal drink menu, locally made pastries, and local beer and wine for later in the day. Open 7 am to 4 pm daily. Good for: couples, a slow Saturday, solo afternoons.

5. Abogados Café | Saint Paul (Como Park) A Latina-owned café at 1053 Dale St N with a fun twist: the owners are attorneys, and the menu is law-themed, with drinks like the Fearless Lawtte. Organic Latin American coffee roasted by a local partner roaster. Good for: friends, a conversation starter, supporting a small business.

How to support your local coffee shop

  • Buy a bag of freshly roasted beans or a gift card instead of defaulting to the chain
  • Bring a friend, and tell people about your favorite shop
  • Leave a review online and tag the shop on social media
  • Visit on slower days, so the staff and regulars get a little breathing room
